Historic Restoration/Preservation of Building

Completed in 2005, the Cannery Station project is the final product of the adaptive reuse of the original old Valley Packers building in Puyallup. The project involved the complete renovation of a historic fruit cannery building. The building was designed to meet all local, state, and federal codes while still maintaining the old structure. Several of its features (including some of its original windows, a sugar tank, fruit-weighing scale, structure post beams, and grand stairway) were restored and incidental items such as fruit cans and wicker weaving materials were turned into artwork.

Key architectural features of the original building were retained and enhanced during the renovation. First and foremost was the preservation of the simple yet iconic exterior shell of the building that has a pleasing, no-nonsense appearance one would expect for its humble farm-related history. Other features, equally important to the historic look of the building, include 1) the window pattern and breakup, 2) the reconstruction of roof top window monitors, 3) attention to the authentic siding pattern, 4) preservation of sliding barn door elements and 5) reconstruction of a loading dock on the west side of the building.

Probably the single most interesting exterior feature of the building that was preserved for posterity was the steel sugar tank mounted on top of the high roof. This element anchors the building visually and helps to communicate the historic function of the property.

Another historic artifact that has been incorporated into the new interior layout is the large old fashioned upright scale used for weighing berries fresh from the fertile Puyallup Valley.

All historical aspects of the building were maintained, including the original sugar tank, beams, scales and sliding doors. The outside color of the building was also chosen because it was the same color as the original Valley Packers building. The design of Cannery Station satisfied the requirements to become a landmark on the state historical record.

This public/private partnership included Prium, nearby Sound Transit (Puyallup Commuter Rail Station), City of Puyallup, DSHS and several community groups. The property is in the middle of a historic view corridor and citizens can now walk from Main Street through a public breezeway in the building to see the old train kiosk for the Puyallup Commuter Rail Station. A major transportation hub, approximately 800-1,000 people use the rail station daily.

Parking Garage/Retail Complex

DSHS moved its staff into the 27,000 sq. ft. building in 2006 after the completion of a nearby parking garage/retail complex (70,000 sq. ft). That second half of this project involved Prium, City of Puyallup staff, DSHS, BCRA and several community groups.

The parking garage consists of concrete frame structure, sloping tiered parking decks for 158 stalls, and ten stall in the adjacent parking lot. Ground floor retail space faces street frontage. Architecturally, the building is designed to compliment the Cannery building with coordination of exterior colors.
